Happy Halloween!

Its crazy to think that its already the end of October, which for me has come to fast. In a week, I am officially placing my application for the Athletic Training program at Grand Valley and I am so excited to finally get this step done and move forward. I just wanted to share a little bit about Athletic Training because there is so much that people don't know. It is so much more than wrapping ankles and standing on the sideline of football games. Other job opportunities that are out there are working in hospitals, clinics and even the military. I personally want to work with teams when I first begin because I love the environment and the athletes. Athletic Trainers are what we say the "mom" of a team keeping records and holding all the little things that a team may need that most athletes forget. We also simply take care and be the "mom" to athletes making sure they follow all the guidelines to keep everyone healthy and injury free. I have chosen this path because so many things can happen on the field in a emergency situation and I want to be prepared to help and guide so I can prevent worst injuries occurring. I have already learned so much and looking forward to everything else that comes. Hopefully, I will be getting into the program for this coming winter semester.

On the other side of things this fall weather has had its up and downs and sadly the weather being colder has been making me not want to run outside as much! There's always inside workouts that we can all do! Everyone should totally check out all the classes Melissa puts on the blog because those are soo much fun and great indoor workouts, especially Groove!

Happy Halloween everyone and try to use up any last couple days of decent weather!!

I am Loving this SONG

Groove !!!!! Thursday's at 7:00

This week I am LOVING this Groove SONG !!! It is so powerful and dynamic. I absolutely Love Grooving to this song, finishing a Groove Class with this incredibly soulful and Moving song.

                                                                           "Human"

I can hold my breath
I can bite my tongue
I can stay awake for days
If that's what you want
Be your number one

I can fake a smile
I can force a laugh
I can dance and play the part
If that's what you ask
Give you all I am

I can do it
I can do it
I can do it

But I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human

I can turn it on
Be a good machine
I can hold the weight of worlds
If that's what you need
Be your everything

I can do it
I can do it
I'll get through it

But I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human

I'm only human
I'm only human
Just a little human

I can take so much
'Til I've had enough

'Cause I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human

Shake Your Asana

HEY HEY,

We have almost made it to the weekend... I am so Happy.. I went to Hot yoga again last night at the Funky Buddha it was awesome. I am really liking Hot Yoga. I went to Shake Your Asana which means that they play good music along with the class. I really need to take few pictures while I am there so you can see what it looks like. I keep forgetting Sorry!!! Quick note about what to were to Hot Yoga. The first time I went I just wore shorts and a T-Shirt, this time I wore Capri Leggings a moisture wicking tank top with the built in bra and a wide lulu headband to keep the sweat from my eyes. I felt so much better this time. My legs weren't all slippery from being sweaty and I didn't get any sweat in my eyes this time. Oh one more thing I downloaded the Funky Buddha app so I can just sign up for classes right from my phone, which is very nice.

Check out there website HERE

Snagged this Picture from their website

I don't Think that I gave a Re-Cap of my Late Night Tuesday Cardio/Combo Class yet !!! So by request of my sweet sister in law I set up a late night fitness class at Sasha Sandor Fitness studio in Zeeland. This was the first week of the class and I think that it went GREAT.. we Started at 8:15 and did a Mix of Cardio and Body weight Exercises. The group of ladies that showed up was great they worked really hard through out the entire class. I can't wait to put together next weeks routine. Actually a better name for the class might be BOOT CAMP !!! I put together this quick motivational fitsnap for the class not sure if i will use it .....

Where does Fitness come from?

Hey EVERYONE! So, I am been learning a lot about the history of physical activity and education in a class I am taking. Over the course of the semester we have been looking at the ancient history and going through the years that leads up until now. It has been cool to see how being "fit" has evolved to what it is today. With fitness and living healthy becoming a growing industry it's interesting to me to learn the history because really all these things go back to the ancient times starting with Greece and Rome, which  we all seem to know about, but I myself didn't realize how much of physical education had developed from Renaissance, Enlightenment and Reformation. We see people start to wonder and challenge the body and see what it could do. We saw the first physical educators explore different exercise in the 1800s, which then got brought into the United States. An interesting part to this history is the fact of how much American fitness developed during the late 1800s and early 1900s. A huge part of the thinking was bettering yourself and to be "fit" and promote better health and living conditions. This was the first time period we started to see women getting active; it was socially okay. Women danced and lifted, strong women was beginning to be popular. Isn't that what we are looking for today? To feel good in our own body? As women aren't we just as strong as men? There is so much more I could go into and look into on the history of fitness, but I just feel that the coolest connections of a healthy life is in how we feel and what we want to be. We are in control of our bodies no one else is. In our history we see these questions asked and answered through being active. Personally doing something active and having fun outdoors: running, playing soccer or simply taking a walk is where I feel the best. My challenge this semester and the rest of school is to find that time to do something I love. I challenge all of the readers to do the same.

Try to answer this: What is something you feel in control of your body and simply love to do?

Where does your feeling of "fit" come from?

Keep Running and Explore

Hot Yoga

How many of you have Tried Hot Yoga ?

Last night I tried Hot Yoga for the First time at the Funky Buddha. I went with my friend Rachel who's foot is healing from an injury and yoga is a great low impact but intense workout that we can do together. Let me Tell you it was HOT !!! I was sweating so much... my legs, my arms, my face, it was just crazy. Sorry I didn't take any pictures but I will. I signed up for the $39.00 30 Day intro package so I will be heading back soon. Things I learned at my first Hot Yoga .. wear Yoga pants. I thought I should wear shorts because I would be to HOT in Pants or Capris but my legs go so slippery from sweat that it was challenging to do some of the poses because my hands of feet would slide off my legs .. LOL ....Hot Yoga Problems... They also had a cute little store in the entry way I need to check out but I was chatting so much with Rachel and our Great Instructor Larissa that I didn't get a chance to take a peek.

Learn more about the Funky Buddha by Checking out their website.

The Funky Buddha makes it really easy to just sign up and pay for classes online right from there website. They also said that they have and APP which makes signing up for classes even faster. I still have to check that out. More to Come on my adventures of HOT YOGA #funkybuddha #lovetomovemi

Running Club Adventures

Hey everyone my name is Sara Helder and my awesome sister is the writer of this blog. Melissa is my training inspiration when it comes to running and staying healthy. I am a student at Grand Valley State Univeristy studying Athletic Training. As you can tell fitness seems to run in the family. This fall I joined GVSU's Running Club and it had been the best thing I could have chosen. I don't know why I didn't do this last year. My sister (Melissa) asked if I wanted to share some of out adventures of the running club on the blog and of course I said yes! So far as a club we have group runs and run all over campus or explore the trails that are all over in the ravines located on campus. We have had several runs where I come back covered in mud, I love it! The cool thing about running club is that everyone is so included and we are all friends.

We had our first NIRCA race, which is cross country race for university club teams, this past saturday. Other teams that were there were Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Central. There was a lot of runners and all were very fast. The course was pretty flat but tons of mud! It was really cool to be at a meet very similar to high school because I was really missing it. I didn't know this NIRCA races existed until now.

Another part of my running club weekend was that we went the Gazelles Dirty Herd Fall Classic at Robinettes Apple Orchard. There was a 2mile and 4mile run. It was in the most zig-zaggy and hilly trails that looped in and out of the apple orchard. Apart of the run was all the running shoe vendors including Saucony, New Balance, Solomon and Brooks were there promoting different shoes and allowing us to try out the shoes. I tried out the New Balance Minimus shoes; they were very light and really didn't have any support. Running through the trails I could feel every rock and stick. I don't know if I would wear them for road running but they were super like and great for the trails.

All in all I am very excited for all my adventures with running club and Ill keep you posted on anymore cool events. Also shout out to anyone looking for a 5k the GVSU Running Club is putting on a Turkey Trot November 22 at 10am. Melissa has put a link in another posting.

Keeping running and Explore!!

XC  & Portage Weekend

It was cool and a chance of rain all day Saturday at our Portage meet but we lucked out and it didn't rain until the very end. I got a few pictures.. but I was running around so much that I didn't have a chance to get to many good ones. There were Lots of PR's and Happy Runners!! I just LOVE Coaching Cross Country.

One quick little story .. This is my 4th year helping coach and the first year we went to Portage there was this freshmen Maria and she liked apples so I brought her an apple to the meet for her great running... This year I did the same thing and she is a Senior now... kind of a bitter sweet moment. There are certain students that will move on and you know you probably will not see them again after cross country and graduation ... I am really opening to stay in touch with Maria even after she graduates.
